Sharpe set up his tackle manufacturing business in John Street Aberdeen. The company quickly established a reputation for quality and innovation in the design and manufacture of split cane rods for salmon and trout fishing, with the subsequent development of a comprehensive range of tackle, consumables and accessories. Indeed, the post war period saw Sharpes products being promoted by the British Council of Industrial Design and exhibited round the world.
However the continued success with traditional materials meant that it was slower to adopt the new composite materials which were starting to be utilised in the manufacture of fishing rods. As a consequence, whilst Sharpes was always highly regarded manufacturer for quality of materials and workmanship, it lost its world leading position. This was a bitter blow but it had the effect of galvanising the company into both utilising the new materials like carbon etc and looking for the next significant advance in materials so as to ride the new wave rather than be left behind.
I believe that Sharpes bought the rights to the Scottie logo and set up in business making split cane rods in the early nineties. The company had a professional rod finisher at the time by the name of Phil Hawker and the early rods from that period were of very high quality. The rod is in near mint condition and carries the Scottie logo above the handle. The rod is dated and and the build is of very high quality. There has been no refurbishment as in ring replacements to the rod but it has been professionally varnish dipped to a smooth glass like finish.

Doak Miramichi Hand Tied Tapered Leaders We began making these for our own use a few years ago after being disappointed with the various manufactured leaders of the day. When customers asked what leader we used, the next question would often be why don’t you have them for sale, so we had to start offering them. Along the way, we developed a unique method of tapering and trimming the blood-knots to make them less obtrusive, which is a frequent complaint with knotted leaders.
No chemicals, heat, lubricants or saliva are used in welding the knots, but we think you’ll be pleased with the results, no matter how we do it. Every leader is tied by Jerry Doak and every section is carefully measured and inspected to ensure the highest quality and consistency. For darker rivers like the Miramichi, we use Maxima Chameleon which many salmon fishermen prefer for its abrasion resistance, excellent knot strength and just the right amount of stiffness to ensure a powerful turn over and great fly presentation.
For rivers with clear water, we also offer a more translucent option made with Maxima Ultragreen material. Whichever option you choose, we’re confident you’ll see why these have become our best selling leaders by a Miramichi mile. By the way, we don’t recommend using anything made of rubber to straighten these leaders, as you can easily build up excess heat which can damage the material. Just anchor the looped end securely, hold the leader tightly and rub your hand down the entire length.
Your palm will develop just enough heat to straighten it out perfectly.

And why should you care? Today, the weight of a fly line is measured in a tiny unit called grains. Rather helpfully, the fly line manufacturers came up with a numbering system that helped how heavy or light a particular fly line is. This numbering system runs from 1 ultralight to 14 and beyond heavy. Actually, it’s important to understand this concept. Remember, in fly fishing, it is the weight of the fly line that casts the fly! If you choose the wrong weight fly line for the types of flies you plan on using, you are going to have many, many problems when it comes to casting and control.
Thus, if you put on a tiny size 14 dry fly onto a fly line that has a weight of 7, control will be lost and when the fly hits the water – it will hit it with a splash due to the heavy weight of the line which pulls the fly down harder. Conversely, attach a heavy fly to a fly line that has a light weight – and the fly will literally go all over the place. Control will be next to impossible and, once again, the fly will crash into the water. Because of all this, it is crucial – repeat crucial – to make sure whatever fly rod you get has been designed to “mate up” with the fly line you’ll be using.
